La base científica de este experimento

Chromatography is a technique used to purify and extract organic and inorganic substances from mixtures. It is based on the different speed of migration of various chemical compounds carried by a solvent (liquid phase) on a substrate (solid phase).

Notas de seguridad

 • Work in a fume cupboard or outdoors.

Preguntas para los alumnos

 • Observe. What do the bands consist of?
 • Explain briefly the chromatography principles.

Qué puedes esperar

A series of bands is observed on the paper showing also different colours that indicate the presence of different.

Chromatography is based on the different speed of migration of the components due to their molecular interaction with solvents (mobile phase) and substrates (stationary phase).

As the paper absorbs the solvent this carries the pigments which in their turn interact with the paper moving with different speeds.

Eliminación

Dispose of the filter paper and the solid mass into the solids waste container. Dispose of the solvents into the flammables waste container.
